ASAAPS Email Support Listserves

As a public service, ASAAPS offers free email support listserves. A listserve automatically sends every subscriber every email that other subscribers post. This means conversations can happen easily, and that people with questions or concerns can quickly receive lots of advice, resources, or commiseration. On very active listserves (such as the primary ASAAPS listserve), it can also mean your in-box may fill with emails on topics you are not interested in. If you subscribe to a listserve, it is your responsibility to do two things: 1) Use your delete button freely; and 2) Be as specific as possible with your subject line so that recipients can easily determine if they are interested in that particular topic.

ASAAPS’ primary listserve is for anyone who is interested in topics and news related to the abuse, neglect, exploitation, and self-neglect of elders and adults with disabilities. We also sponsor several more narrowly-focused listserves. The descriptions for each listserve and links to subscribe to the listserves are below.

ASAAPS

PLUG INTO YOUR FIELD

If you work with, support, report on, study, advocate or care for elder or disabled adult survivors of abuse – or are one yourself – the ASAAPS listserve is for you.

ASAAPS’ international, English-language listserve is the one-stop source for news, resources, discussion, advice, and support on everything related to preventing and recovering from abuse of elders and adults with disabilities. Subscribing to this free listserve will help you:

  • KEEP UP WITH THE FIELD

Hear about emerging frauds; new resources, research, and publications; newly-introduced legislation and newly-enacted laws, regulations and policies; new programs; and other key developments.

  • IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Listen in as survivors and professionals discuss how it feels to be on each side of the helping dyad, or participate in debates about the roles and resources of advocacy groups and public employees. Learn about conference and training opportunities. Benefit from responses to a request for technical assistance on an obstacle you have yet to encounter.

  • SUPPORT AND PROMOTE YOUR AGENCY OR ORGANIZATION

Learn about funding opportunities, and identify potential project partners and advisory board members. Share your achievements, your questions, your experience. Network with longer-tenured professionals, advocates, and survivors from all over the world.

  • CONTRIBUTE TO FIELD DEVELOPMENT

Help collect and then build upon the field’s knowledge by responding to questions and surveys and participating in resource compilations and collaborative projects. Discuss ethics, public policy priorities, and the direction in which the field is (or should be) moving. Encourage student and media interest and understanding.

  • BE SUPPORTED AND WELL-ROUNDED

Be uplifted and energized by emotional and technical support from people who know: survivors themselves as well as dedicated professionals with decades of experience. Benefit from ad hoc “multidisciplinary teams” from diverse geographical, political, and prosecutorial environments as well as professional perspectives.

Although listserve members address dozens of topics, in Summer 2005 we have a special focus on two issues: identifying the “most important” books and articles in the field, and determining what should be in a national clearinghouse and how the data should be organized. Join us! To subscribe, go to www.ASAAPS.org/aboutus/listserves_sub.php and fill out the form.

SURVIVORS

The purpose of this listserve is to support and empower survivors of elder or disabled adult abuse (including their family members). Although professionals are welcome as subscribers, expect that most of your support and information will come from other survivors.

Topics on this listserve can include:

>> Emotional responses people have to being abused or witnessing the abuse of someone close to you.

>> Techniques and resources survivors have found useful in coping with what has happened.

>> Experiences subscribers have had in working with various services and professionals.

>> Actions subscribers have taken (or can take) to turn their experiences into positive personal growth and/or community betterment.

>> How to think through the possible implications of available courses of action.

>> Whatever else a survivor needs to talk about to feel not as alone in what you have experienced.

STILL SEEKING HELP

Many people seek help from adult protective services, long-term care ombudsmen, protection and advocacy services, regulators, law enforcement, or other officials to help them deal with their own, their loved one's, or their neighbor's suspected abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, or self-neglect.

Sometimes the help people seek is not forthcoming, either because the victim doesn't fit the organization's service profile, or for other reasons.

Either way, seeking and failing to find help can be devastating. Still Seeking Help is an email listserve designed to support you if this has happened to you. Whether you want to find another service provider, appeal the initial ruling, hold the system accountable, file a lawsuit, or simply grieve your inability to access help, Still Seeking Help can link you with others who are struggling with the same issues.

The members of this listserve CANNOT, necessarily, provide you with direct access to supervisors, lawyers, appeal mechanisms, or other referrals. However, we can support you and brainstorm with you as you explore your options for still seeking help.
