Title: Ga. Court Overturns Man's Death Sentence

Comments: The death sentence of William Marvin Gulley for the murder of an 81-year-old woman and the rape of her 60-year-old daughter during a robbery has been overturned. Georgia's Supreme Court has ruled jurors should have heard Gulley had saved two lives before they sentenced him.

Comments: The Georgia Department of Human Resources' Division of Aging Services is warning people about Katrina-related scams including collection jars, web sites that look like legitimate charities but are actually collecting credit card information for identity theft, and telemarketers calling for donations but asking for bank account numbers, credit card numbers, or other personal information.

Title: Elderly woman scammed for over $1 million
  • Prosecution
Comments: Article notes that an employee of the SOWEGA Council on Aging is among those accused of embezzling more than $1 million from an elderly woman. The SOWEGA Council on Aging volunteer accused of masterminding the crime is also known to have guardianship over at least three other elderly persons. The mastermind "was supposed to have been monitored by the courts, but she failed to turn in financial reports, and hearings about that were repeatedly postponed."
