Title: Hawai'I care homes are passing new inspections
Comments: In February, unannounced spot visits began at adult residential care homes. "[A]ll sides now say the inspections seem to be a success. Through June, none of the inspections has unearthed elder abuse or neglect. Only 12 of the homes were cited for problems. Most of the 77 'deficiencies,' as officials call them, involved improper documentation, labeling of medicine and maintenance."

Title: 'Senior Scam Hotline' helps avoid fraud
Comments: The Better Business Bureau has set up a senior scam hotline, staffed by volunteers between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays, that will help elders determine if they've been offered an opportunity to be fleeced by a scam.

Title: Parties report progress in care home inspections
Comments: There were 391 unannounced inspection visits to adult residential homes from February through December last year; inspectors found 122 deficiencies at 33 homes. The office also had 39 complaints last year. The uannounced inspections were authorized in 2003.

Title: Emergency shelters for the disabled lacking

Comments: "Nursing homes and other care providers in Hawai'I are expected to have evacuation plans, but people who look after an elderly parent or a disabled or sick child at home, or are frail and live by themselves, are basically left to find help and shelter on their own in a hurricane or other natural disaster." None of the state's 219 shelters have been designated to help people with special needs.

Title: Counseling, fines ordered in abuse cases; 6 caregivers plead guilty to abusing their mental patients.

Comments: Yvette Poki, David Oclinaria, Bernadette Pule, and Gloria Fuga -- all former employees of an Ewa Beach home for people with developmental disabilities -- and Lizastarlene Mays-Cargo and Melvin Ho of a daycare program in Washiawa all pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of an incompetent person. Each was ordered to undergo anger-management counseling and pay fines of $250 each.

Title: Hilo Couple Found Guilty in Theft of Elderly Man's Estate

Comments: A jury deliberated two days before finding Laura and Abraham Kauwe guilty of stealing a 91-year-old man's home, vacant lot, and more than $60,000 from his bank accounts.

Title: Hilo pair guilty of bilking elderly man
  • Prosecution
Comments: Laura Kauwe and her husband, Abraham Kauwe, have been found guilty by a jury of stealing an elderly man's life savings, his home and a vacant lot. He was 86 and recently widowed when he advertised for a caregiver, which is how he met Laura Kauwe in 2000.
