Title: Nursing home errors punish the vulnerable
  • Nursing Home
Comments: "The Star's analysis identified 11 nursing homes that were each hit with at least seven violations for harming residents or jeopardizing their safety. Of 132 area homes, "35 percent failed at least once to prevent falls and other accidents. 30 percent did not prevent avoidable bedsores or treated them poorly. 27 percent failed to treat severe burns properly, give pain medication or perform other necessary medical services." Title: What's behind the problems?
  • Nursing Home
Comments: "Staffing shortages, poor training and communication breakdowns. Those were the main causes of problems at the 11 area nursing homes with the highest number of serious violations of health standards, according to an analysis by The Kansas City Star…. The Star's analysis found that Missouri and Kansas homes with less-than-average staffing had about 12 percent more violations per home than those with average staffing or better." "…Missouri only requires aides to have 75 hours of training and 100 hours of on-the-job supervision. Kansas requires 90 hours of training, which includes on-the-job supervision. Missouri manicurists need 400 hours, and those in Kansas need 350."

Title: For-profit homes are cited for higher number of violations
  • Nursing Home
Comments: "In their most recent inspections, for-profit facilities averaged 10.2 minor and serious violations per home compared with 7.4 violations at non-profit institutions…. That's nearly 40 percent more violations…. [A]nalysis of records for Kansas and Missouri shows that residents of nonprofit homes receive an average of 20 minutes more nursing care each day than those in for-profit homes…. Medicaid recipients [on which facilities say they lose money] accounted for 65 percent of the residents in for-profit homes compared with 53 percent of those in nonprofit homes."
