Title: Elder abuse is no rarity in New Hampshire
Comments: Of the state's 1,873 cases in 2003, 437 of the victims were 80-89, 436 were 70-79, and 250 were between 60-69. 813 of the cases were self-neglect, 297 were emotional abuse, 222 were physical abuse, 203 were financial exploitation, and 45 were sexual abuse.

Comments: SB 27 would exempt nursing homes and residential care facilities from annual inspections if: they do not accept Medicaid and Medicare patients, they keep the same administrator, and they are not the subject of any complaint. Article also notes the first meeting of the newly-formed Elder Abuse Advisory Council, appointed by HHS Commissioner John Stephen to "look into incidences of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of seniors."

Comments: In FY 2005, which ended on July 1, there were 2,221 reported cases of elder abuse in the state, up from 2,130 in FY 04 and 1,424 in 2000. Nearly half the cases were self-neglect.

Title: Reports of elder abuse, neglect rise; Most cases thought to be unintentional
Comments: Last year New Hampshire received 2,221 reports of mistreated adults, compared to 1,424 in 2000. "To help, the health department recently formed a group of social workers, lawmakers and nurses who will spend the next year crafting a plan to prevent elder abuse from growing along with the over-65 population. The tasks include the simple, such as ordering wallet-sized cards listing the signs of abuse to the complicated, like stiffening legal penalties for crimes against the elderly or disabled."

Comments: In FY 2005 (ending June 30, 2005), 1,450 reports of elder abuse were filed with the Board of Elderly and Adult Services. There were 730 self-neglect reports and 14 sexual abuse reports. Article also discusses pending legislation and how adult protective services works.
