Comments: At least 18 registered sex offenders are living in Oklahoma nursing homes, assisted-living centers, and residential-care homes. An advocacy group that found this data says video cameras should be used in these facilities to protect other residents. The article lists the facilities.

Comments: Wes Bledsoe of A Perfect Cause has been searching databases and "found dozens of registered sex offenders living in nursing homes in Missouri, Florida and New Mexico." He had previously located at least 18 registered sex offenders who were residents in Oklahoma nursing homes.

Comments: A member of the state Board of Health who prompted the "uncovering of the Oklahoma nursing home scandal in 2000," is again charging that state legislators ("at the behest of nursing home administrators") are putting pressure on state Health Department investigators to "lighten up" their written evaluations and criticisms of nursing homes.

Title: Groups call for ban on sex offenders in nursing homes

Comments: "A coalition of advocacy groups delivered a letter to Gov. Brad Henry requesting an investigation into reports of rape, assault and abuse of nursing home residents by registered sex offenders in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities." The letter apparently calls for an outright ban on convicted sex offenders in nursing homes.

Title: Stricter penalties for domestic abuse among new laws

Comments: A new law has gone into effect. It covers domestic abuse, including abuse of parents and abuse by someone who currently or formerly lived in the same household. "House Bill 2626 increases the penalty for domestic abuse to a county jail sentence up to one year and/or a fine of up to $5,000. On a second conviction, the defendant could face four years behind bars. It also increases the crime from a misdemeanor to a felony if the crime results in great bodily injury to the victim. Then the attacker could face 10 years in prison or one year in the county jail. The penalty doubles for a second offense."

Title: Oklahoma Governor Henry Announces Nursing Home Reform Effort

Comments: Governor Brad Henry is promoting an initative to "curb assaults in nursing homes by increasing criminal background checks" of nursing home employees and volunteers, including those who do not provide direct care. He also proposes adding more state health inspectors and "requir[ing] the state's registered sex offender list to be open for public inspection at each nursing home so that residents and their loved ones will be able to make an informed decision."

Title: Nursing Home Resident Identified As Sex Offender

Comments: "A Perfect Cause" advocacy group has tracked down the nursing home residence of a male sex offender who has been accused of assaulting an 89-year-old, female co-resident. He had been moved from the woman's nursing home and was listed as address unknown. "[U]nder the law, it's apparently no one's responsibility to track him down."
