Domestic violence bill defeated |
|
| Comments: |
A state Senate Judicial Committee voted down, 5-5, a bill previously passed by the House that would allow judges to confiscate the firearms of anyone served with a permanent restraining order. Advocates note that all of the 5 opposing Senators (and one other Senator) had received campaign contributions from the National Rifle Association. |

Resident #1: Public records: Unavailable |
- Vulnerable Adult Abuse
- Nursing Home
|
| Comments: |
"The record of a nursing home inspection is supposed to be public information -- but how soon can the public get to it? In Rhode Island, it can take a month, even if an inspection uncovers serious violations. The Health Department, in order to be business friendly, allows nursing home operators a grace period in which to attach comments before inspections become public." Members of the public can get records directly from the Health Department, but it takes several days to fill a walk-in request. |

Few complaints lead to probes of nursing homes; A Health Department official says a 'high percentage' of complaints cannot be verified because there are no witnesses |
|
| Comments: |
The Health Department received about 600 nursing home complaints two years ago, investigated some 751 last year, and had 1,036 complaints in the year that ended June 30. Article also discusses the three years it took for the Health Department's Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline to investigate a complaint that a doctor had stopped a nursing home resident's "daily heart pills for no apparent reason." |

| Comments: |
The Governor has announced new legislation on nursing homes, saying that "the proposed reforms had been under discussion for some time. He also "plans to ask the General Assembly to authorize more money to hire additional personnel" at the state department responsible for nursing home inspections. |

M. Charles Bakst: Nursing homes: Facing our conscience |
|
| Comments: |
Political columnist comments on key features of the paper's nursing home regulation expose and says, "I will be curious now to see what kind of reaction -- in words and in deeds -- the [article] package draws from Governor Carcieri and the department. I will be curious to see if any heads roll or if any changes are introduced in the way the department does business and relates to the public." |

Carcieri calls for stricter nursing home supervision |
- Vulnerable Adult Abuse
- Nursing Home
- Legislation
|
| Comments: |
"The Nursing Home Patient Safety Act" "would for the first time grant the Department of Health and the Department of Human Services authority to investigate the financial condition of a nursing home. It would increase the accountability of nursing home owners by requiring them to have more transparent corporate structures." "[Governor] Carcieri said he was immediately installing new technology to ensure the tracking of complaints from nursing home residents and their families." |
