Title: New Domestic Violence Law Takes Effect Jan. 1; Tougher Penalties, Required Education Programs Part of New Laws

Comments: A new domestic violence law provides that: -- Criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature becomes a felony and a "violent crime". A conviction will require a fine and/or prison time. -- First-time offenders will not be able to clear their record by taking an anger management class. -- Two convictions in a 10-year period will result in a mandatory 90-day jail sentence.

Title: Handling of mentally ill may change; Group advocating better management and treatment
