Comments: "So far this year, state investigators have probed 413 other cases of "caretaker" neglect or abuse. Overall, the agency investigates 2,300 cases annually arising from complaints of abuse, neglect or exploitation of an elderly or disabled person.

Title: 'Family state' high in abuse?
Comments: Study at LDS Hospital's emergency room found that nearly 10% of the women treated there had been the victim of intimate-partner abuse in the past year; nearly 40% had been abused during their lifetimes. Of those who had been abused in the past year, 40% had considered suicide.

"According [to the presenters] abuse against women with disabilities starts earlier, lasts longer and goes unrecognized for longer periods of time than abuse against non-disabled women. Comments: A 1998 study found that half of surveyed nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and residential health-care facilities "lacked emergency generators for life support and heat, a third failed to secure water heaters and a quarter had not trained employees how to turn off natural gas. Roughly 40 percent had not performed annual emergency drills."
