Title: Adult home care in liability crisis
Comments: "Over the past two years, nearly all the insurance companies that once offered liability coverage for adult family homes in Washington have pulled out of the market….To get coverage in this risk-averse environment, home owners have been told they must kick out clients who are mentally ill or have dementia, stop housing men and women together, or stop mixing frail elderly residents with people under 60."

Title: Rural caregivers face extra challenges
  • Self Neglect
Comments: Column on the unique struggles of rural caregivers includes this: "Another client is probably abusing his demented wife and himself by refusing help because, in that refrain many of us hear so often, 'There's nothing wrong with us! Leave us alone!' They have no living relatives to intervene. The closest Adult Protective Services office is 150 miles away. The nurse doesn't have the evidence to persuade a beleaguered, overworked state agency to make the long trip to investigate."
