Comments: "At least six West Virginians have given their bank account numbers to scam artists claiming to sell the Medicare prescription drug benefit cards that go into effect Jan. 1, according to an e-mail alert sent to state Medicare and consumer protection officials." At least 13 states have reported similar scams.

Comments: Lengthy examination of the attempts of neighbors to get care for a mentally ill neighbor who was heating her house with fires inside tires. Despite involvement by police and adult protective services and official memos cautioning she would burn down the neighborhood, that's exactly what ended up happening: she "erased 10 percent of the town's tax base" in a fire started at her house.
