IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Want to both prevent elder and disabled adult abuse and
empower people to act to help any friends or relatives who
they suspect are being abused? Reprinting It Takes A
Village columns is an easy, effective way to do both.
People who encounter elder abuse among their friends, relatives,
colleagues, or customers may not recognize the symptoms of
abuse, and even less frequently know what to do when they
do recognize it. Experience also shows that people do not
respond well to thinking of themselves as potential elder
or disabled adult abuse victims, but are open to hear what
they can do to help "others." It was with
this research in mind that It Takes A Village was
designed.
ITAV is a monthly, upbeat, positive, and, above
all, practical discussion of how concerned people
can help their neighbors and friends (with a particular,
if not always explicit, emphasis on avoiding elder and disabled
adult abuse, neglect, and exploitation). Each column contains
a box summarizing "What You Can Do," to encourage readers
to put the column's information to immediate use.
Organizational members of ASAAPS are entitled to republish
any or all ITAV columns in their own publications,
or as stand-alone flyers. Reprint rights to ITAV columns
are also available to non-ASAAPS members at a price of $60
per column.
Regular publishing of ITAV columns is encouraged,
because many people need multiple exposures to a new topic
before the information begins to really seep into their consciousness.
It is also important to repeatedly show how a very scary
prospect -- becoming the victim of abuse, neglect, or exploitation
-- not only can be spoken about, but also can be positively
addressed in a myriad of ways. Repetitive exposure to examples
of how positive changes have been made and of the ways people
can actually help those they perceive to be in need, should
help raise the percentage of cases coming to the attention
of officials, lower the isolation of victims, and increase
the number of measures people take to reduce the incidence
of abuse in their own and in loved ones' lives.
